The Air Force is looking to field a sixth-generation F-22A Raptor replacement fighter jet within the next 20 years, according to an Air Combat Command official.

While it is unclear whether the advanced combat fighter will be operational or still in the testing phase, officials are using the year 2028 as a “notional date” for planning purposes, according to Col. Jim Firth, deputy director of requirements at ACC.

“When you back that [date] up, we’re probably already pushing it as far as the time it takes to develop an advance weapons system,” Firth said in an Oct. 29 interview at ACC Headquarters.
